The geography of the area provides a natural shield for the city. Mountains surround Nha Trang on three sides. On the fourth side, a large island and four smaller islands sit in the ocean.

These islands are positioned directly in front of the main city area. They help block major storms from causing damage. This protection is important because the city has a tropical savanna climate. This means there is a long dry season from January to August. A shorter wet season occurs from September to December. During this time, the north-east monsoon brings rainfall. Sometimes, extremely heavy rainfall from typhoons occurs during the wet season.

The history of the region is deeply connected to the Kingdom of Champa. In ancient times, the area was known as Kauthara.

Some researchers believe the name Nha Trang comes from the Cham language. They suggest it is a Vietnamese spelling of Ea Dran. This name means "Reed River" and refers to the Cai River. The area officially became Vietnamese territory in 1698.

Nha Trang changed rapidly during the early 20th century. In 1924, the French colonial administration decreed it a townlet.

This townlet was formed from ancient villages like Xương Huân and Phước Hải. During the period of French Indochina, it served as the de facto capital of Khánh Hòa Province. In 1937, the status of the area was upgraded to a town. The city has seen many administrative shifts since then. In 1958, the town was briefly divided into two rural communes. Later, in 1970, the town was reestablished. By 1977, the government upgraded Nha Trang to a city. It became the capital of Khánh Hòa Province in 1989.

Today, Nha Trang is a major hub for tourism and marine science. The city had a population of about 535,000 people in 2023.

In some suburban areas, lobster farming is a key industry. The city and province are also major contributors to Vietnam's annual budget. Future growth may come from industrial parks near Cam Ranh Bay. The completion of a deep-water port on Vân Phong Bay will also be significant.

Education and science are also central to the city's identity. Nha Trang is home to Nha Trang University and the Pasteur Institute of Nha Trang.

The Pasteur Institute has a long history involving Alexandre Yersin. Yersin was a French-Swiss bacteriologist who discovered the Yersinia pestis bacterium. He lived in Nha Trang for 50 years and studied the bubonic plague. A museum and a shrine now honor his achievements. The city's identity is a mix of its ancient roots and its modern role as a scientific and tourist destination.
