Guy Laliberté is a Canadian billionaire businessman and professional poker player. He is most famous for co-founding the world-renowned circus company, Cirque du Soleil. Along with Gilles Ste-Croix, he launched the company in 1984. Since its start, more than 90 million people across the globe have watched their shows. Laliberté is recognized for his creativity and his success as an entrepreneur. He has received many honors for his work in business and the arts.

Laliberté's career began with a life of street performance, known as busking. After leaving Canada at age 18, he traveled through Europe. During these travels, he earned money by playing the accordion. He also learned specialized skills like stilt-walking and fire-eating. Upon returning to Canada, he joined a performing troupe called Les Échassiers. This group included acrobats, jugglers, and fire-breathers who traveled across the country. Even after a brief time working at a hydroelectric dam, he returned to his life as a performer.

In 1984, Laliberté and his colleagues started Cirque du Soleil as a one-year project. They received a government grant to celebrate the 450th anniversary of Jacques Cartier's discovery of Canada. The government of Quebec requested that the group create a touring event for other provinces. Laliberté chose the name "Cirque du Soleil," which means "circus of the sun." He came up with this name while visiting Hawaii. He believed the sun represented energy and youth, which were central to the circus.

Today, Cirque du Soleil is a massive global operation. The company has activities on five different continents. It employs approximately 4,000 people representing over 40 different countries. The company generates an annual revenue that exceeds US$810 million. Laliberté eventually transitioned away from ownership of the company. In 2015, he sold 90% of his stock. In February 2020, he sold his remaining 10% to the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec.

Beyond the circus, Laliberté is a significant figure in the world of high-stakes poker. He began playing large online and live tournaments for recreation around 2006. In April 2007, he finished fourth at the World Poker Tour in Las Vegas. This achievement earned him a prize of $696,220. He also participated in televised shows like High Stakes Poker. In 2012, he helped organize "The Big One," a tournament with a US$1 million buy-in. This event raised over $5,333,328 for his charity, the One Drop Foundation.

The One Drop Foundation is a philanthropic organization founded by Laliberté. Its primary mission is to provide clean drinking water and hygiene products to people worldwide. Laliberté also used his personal adventures to support this cause. In September 2009, he became the first Canadian space tourist. He traveled on the Soyuz TMA-16 spacecraft to the International Space Station. The cost of this spaceflight was $41,816,954. He dedicated his trip to raising awareness about global water issues.

Laliberté's life has included several unique and diverse interests. He became the owner of the Nukutepipi atoll in French Polynesia in 2007. He expressed a desire to make this atoll an autonomous shelter for his family. He intended for it to use solar and ecological systems to remain self-sufficient. He also published a book titled Gaia in 2011. This book featured photographs of Earth taken during his spaceflight. The proceeds from the book were donated to the One Drop Foundation.

Throughout his life, Laliberté has received numerous prestigious awards. He was named the Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur of the Year in 2007. In 2004, Time magazine listed him as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. He was also appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada. In 2010, he and Cirque du Soleil received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. These honors reflect his impact on both the entertainment industry and global business.
