Long ago, he was a street performer. He played the accordion for money. He also walked on tall stilts and ate fire. These skills helped him start a big company.

In 1984, he helped start Cirque du Soleil. This name means "circus of the sun." He chose this name because the sun stands for energy and youth. Now, his circus shows are seen by over 90 million people. The company employs about 4,000 people from many different countries.

Laliberté also loves games and space. He plays poker for fun. He even helped run a huge poker contest. That contest raised millions of dollars for his group, the One Drop Foundation. This group helps people get clean water to drink. In 2009, he became the first Canadian space tourist. He flew in a Soyuz rocket. He used his trip to help people think about water issues. He even wrote a book with photos of Earth from space.
