Before he was a leader in business, Laliberté was a street performer. He traveled through Europe when he was 18 years old. He made money by playing the accordion for people. He also learned how to walk on tall stilts and how to eat fire. Later, he joined a group called Les Échassiers. This troupe included acrobats, jugglers, and people who could breathe fire. They traveled across Canada to perform their shows.

In 1984, Laliberté and Gilles Ste-Croix started Cirque du Soleil. They worked with a small group of other people. At first, it was only meant to be a project for one year. The group got a grant from the government to celebrate an anniversary in Canada. The government of Quebec wanted the show to travel to other places. Today, the company has activities on five different continents. It employs about 4,000 people from over 40 different countries.
