Larry Harvey was a prominent American artist, philanthropist, and activist. He is best known as a primary co-founder of the Burning Man event. He started this massive gathering alongside his friend, Jerry James. Harvey was also a dedicated leader who helped manage the growth of this unique culture. Throughout his life, he worked to promote collaborative art and community connection. He served as a spokesperson and a political strategist for the Burning Man organization.

The origins of Burning Man began with a simple, symbolic act. On the evening of the summer solstice in 1986, a group met at Baker Beach in San Francisco. They brought an effigy, which is a model of a person, to the beach. They set the wooden figure on fire. This small gathering quickly turned into an annual tradition. Within the first four years, the number of attendees rose to more than 800 people.

As the event grew, it underwent significant changes in location and scale. In 1990, the organizers collaborated with the SF Cacophony Society to move the event. It relocated to the Black Rock Desert in Nevada. The event was scheduled to take place over Labor Day weekend. It transformed from a three-day "zone trip" for 80 people into a massive celebration. Today, it is an eight-day counter-culture event. It attracts approximately 70,000 participants from all over the world.

To manage this massive growth, the organizers created a formal structure. In 1997, six main organizers formed a company called Black Rock City LLC. This group was created to manage the complexities of the event. Larry Harvey served as the executive director of this company. He held this important leadership position until his death. This structure allowed the event to maintain its organization as it reached global popularity.

Harvey's influence extended beyond the desert through his work with art foundations. He served as the president of the Black Rock Arts Foundation. This is a non-profit organization that provides art grants. The foundation focuses on promoting interactive and collaborative public art installations. These projects are meant to support communities outside of Black Rock City. Harvey also played a creative role in the event itself. He scripted and co-chaired the Burning Man art department. He also helped curate the annual event themes.

Harvey was a deeply intellectual man who drew inspiration from many complex sources. He was a voracious reader who studied various social and psychological theories. His thinking was influenced by Robert Putnam's book, *Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community*. He also studied *The Varieties of Religious Experience* by William James. Additionally, he was influenced by the writings of Sigmund Freud. These studies helped shape his perspective on community and human experience. He shared these ideas by speaking at prestigious institutions. He addressed audiences at the Oxford Student Union and Harvard University. He also spoke at the San Francisco Commonwealth Club and Grace Cathedral.

Larry Harvey's personal history included diverse experiences across different countries. He was born in San Francisco on January 11, 1948. He spent much of his youth growing up in the Parkrose neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. He graduated from Parkrose High School in 1966. After his graduation, he joined the United States Army. He served as a clerk and was stationed in Germany. He later continued his education at Portland State University.

Larry Harvey passed away on April 28, 2018. He was 70 years old at the time of his death. His death resulted from complications related to a stroke. He had suffered the stroke earlier in that same month. His legacy lives on through the massive global community he helped build. The event he co-founded continues to serve as a major center for art and culture. His work with foundations continues to support public art in many different communities.
