It focuses on community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance. Participants build a temporary city known as Black Rock City.

This city is erected in the Black Rock Desert in northwestern Nevada. The event spans nine days, ending on the Saturday before Labor Day.

Unlike many festivals, Burning Man has no headliners or scheduled performers. Instead, the participants create all the art, activities, and events themselves.

The event is guided by ten core principles.

These include radical inclusion, gifting, and decommodification. Other principles are radical self-reliance, radical self-expression, and communal effort. Participants also follow civic responsibility, participation, immediacy, and leaving no trace. The "leaving no trace" principle is very important for protecting the desert.

It requires people to clean up all Matter Out of Place, or MOOP.

This ensures the desert remains pristine after the city is gone.

Artistic expression takes many different forms at the event.

Sculptures can be experimental, interactive, or even massive buildings. Some people build art cars, which are vehicles modified for artistic purposes.

These creations are often inspired by an annual theme. The Burning Man Project chooses this theme each year. Because there is no separation between art and life, the art becomes part of the living space.

Larry Harvey and Jerry James organized a small function on Baker Beach in San Francisco. They built a wooden effigy using scrap wood.

They burned a wooden man and a smaller wooden dog as an act of radical self-expression. By 1988, Harvey formally named the ritual "Burning Man." He did this to avoid confusion with the "wicker man" tradition. In 1990, the event moved to the Black Rock Desert during "Zone Trip Number 4."

As the event grew, it required more formal organization. In 1999, Black Rock City LLC was formed to manage the event.

Safety and rules have become more detailed as attendance has increased. In 2019, there were 78,850 participants.

To keep people safe, the event has a speed limit of 5 miles per hour. There is also a ban on fireworks and animals. A 9.2-mile-long plastic fence, called the "trash fence," surrounds the event.

Burning Man connects art, community, and environmental responsibility. It has evolved from an underground gathering for bohemians into a major destination.

The event demonstrates how a temporary society can function through shared principles. It uses large-scale art to spark interaction and communal effort.

Whether through a massive mobile disco or a quiet temple, the event remains a study in human creativity.
