LaVeyan Satanism is a modern religious movement and a form of Western esotericism.

It was established by the American author and occultist Anton LaVey. He founded the Church of Satan in 1966 in San Francisco. Scholars often classify this system as a new religious movement. Some researchers also describe it as a "self-religion" or "self-spirituality." It is sometimes called "Rational Satanism" to distinguish it from groups that believe in literal spirits. This distinction is important because LaVeyan followers focus on the physical world rather than the supernatural.

The core mechanism of this belief system relies on symbolism rather than deity worship.

Adherents do not view Satan as a literal being or a supernatural entity. Instead, they treat Satan as a positive archetype. This symbol represents human pride, carnal instincts, and defiance against traditional Abrahamic religions. The movement uses this imagery to shock the public and represent social nonconformity. By using the name "Satanism," LaVey intended to create a philosophy that was both productive and accurate. For many followers, the "god" they refer to is actually their own true self.

LaVeyan practice involves two distinct types of magic.

The first type is called "greater magic." This is a ritual practice designed for psychodramatic catharsis. It functions much like psychotherapy by helping a person focus their emotional energy for a specific goal. The second type is known as "lesser magic." This involves the use of applied psychology and "glamour" to influence others. It is a method of psychological manipulation used to bend a situation or an individual to one's will. These tools are meant to assist in achieving material success and personal influence.

The philosophy is built upon several specific intellectual pillars.

It combines elements of humanism, hedonism, and pop psychology. LaVey’s ideas were heavily influenced by thinkers like Friedrich Nietzsche and Ayn Rand. He also drew from the writings of Arthur Desmond. The movement promotes individualism, egoism, and Social Darwinism. It views humans as animals existing within an amoral universe. Because of this, the church values material success and personal achievement over the concept of "evil for its own sake."

Historically, LaVey used Christianity as a "negative mirror" for his own ideas.

He rejected Christian values such as altruism, self-sacrifice, and community-mindedness. He viewed these as forces that suppressed human nature and promoted irrationality. Instead, LaVey encouraged materialism and the celebration of animal desires. His views were also shaped by Romantic writers like Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley. These writers viewed Satan as a charismatic rebel leader rather than a source of evil. This historical perspective helped LaVey frame his movement as a rebellion against dominant social systems.

Today, the landscape of Satanism is divided into several different groups.

The Church of Satan maintains a purist approach and rejects other organizations as "Devil worshipers." Some groups, such as the First Satanic Church, follow LaVey's original ideas closely. However, other organizations have moved in very different directions. The Temple of Set practices "Theist" Satanism, which involves belief in supernatural entities. The Satanic Temple is also a large, active group. While they are atheists, they reject LaVey's focus on hierarchy. Instead, they focus on social engagement and rights like reproductive and transgender rights.

The significance of LaVey's work is found in its role as a starting point for modern movements.

Scholars note that almost every known Satanist group today derives from the 1966 Church of Satan. Some groups may dismiss LaVey, but they still trace their lineage back to his foundation. He is credited with turning Satanism into a serious, organized religious movement rather than just a literary concept. His work bridges the gap between traditional occultism and modern secular philosophies. It remains a complex blend of ritual, psychology, and individualism.
