Anton Szandor LaVey was a prominent American writer, musician, and religious figure.

He is most widely recognized as the founder of the Church of Satan. This organization established the philosophy known as LaVeyan Satanism. Scholars and historians have described him using many different labels. Some called him "The Black Pope" or "The Father of Satanism." Others, including religious detractors and journalists, labeled him the "evilest man in the world." Regardless of the label, he remained a highly visible and iconic figure in the Satanic milieu.

LaVey's personal history is filled with many colorful and sometimes contradictory claims. He was born Howard Stanton Levey on April 11, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois. His parents were Michael Joseph Levey and Gertrude Augusta. LaVey often shared stories about his ancestry that researchers later found were not accurate. For example, he claimed his grandmother was a "gypsy" from Transylvania, but she was actually born in the Ukraine. He also claimed to have worked in a circus as a cage boy for big cats. However, journalists investigating his past found no evidence to support his circus stories.

Before founding his church, LaVey was a talented musician. He played the piano in a Baptist church during his childhood. In high school, he played the oboe. By the winter of 1948, he worked as an organist in various bars and nightclubs. He was known for his "genius" on keyboards, which helped him find many musical jobs. He even claimed to have had a brief affair with Marilyn Monroe while playing in Los Angeles. This claim was challenged by people who knew her at the time.

In 1966, LaVey officially established the Church of Satan. He declared the founding on Walpurgisnacht, which is April 30. He proclaimed 1966 to be "Year One," or Anno Satanas, marking the start of the Age of Satan.

To build his religious philosophy, he combined several different ideas. He drew from the works of thinkers like Friedrich Nietzsche and Ayn Rand. He also incorporated elements of social Darwinism into his teachings. His writings often included "Satanized" versions of older systems, such as John Dee's Enochian Keys. He authored several influential books, including "The Satanic Bible" and "The Satanic Rituals."

The Church of Satan functioned through various organizational structures. LaVey originally formed a group called the Order of the Trapezoid. This group eventually evolved into the governing body of the Church. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the public work at his "Black House" in San Francisco was limited. Instead, the Church operated through sanctioned regional groups called "grottoes." In 1975, LaVey announced that higher degrees of initiation could be obtained through financial contributions. This period also saw internal changes, such as when Michael Aquino left to form the Temple of Set.

LaVey was a true showman who loved to draw public attention. He became a local celebrity in San Francisco through his paranormal research and live performances. He was known for walking his pet black leopard, named Zoltan. He also kept a lion named Togare, which was later given to the San Francisco Zoo. His parties attracted many notable people from the city. He even served as a technical advisor for the 1975 film "The Devil's Rain." These public acts helped cement his reputation as a magnetic and colorful figure.

LaVey's later life included interactions with government agencies and legal challenges. In 1980, the FBI interviewed him regarding an alleged plot involving Ted Kennedy. During this time, agents suggested his interest in the Church was primarily monetary. He also faced a restraining order from his former companion, Diane Hegarty, in 1984. LaVey died on October 29, 1997, at St. Mary's Medical Center in San Francisco. He died of pulmonary edema. A private, invitation-only Satanic funeral was held in Colma. After his death, his daughter Zeena Schreck published a fact sheet questioning the truth of many of his life stories.
