She is widely honored by the Wiccan community as "the Mother of Modern Witchcraft." As a poet and author, she shaped the religious liturgy of the Gardnerian tradition. This means she helped write the formal prayers and rituals used in worship. Her work provided a spiritual foundation for many practitioners. She transformed fragmented ideas into a cohesive religious system.

Valiente's religious contributions focused on the creation of sacred texts.

She worked extensively on the Gardnerian Book of Shadows. This is a collection of ritual texts used by Wiccans. She famously rewrote the "Charge of the Goddess." Historians like Ronald Hutton describe this as her greatest single contribution. She also wrote "The Witches Rune," which is a chant for circle dancing. Additionally, she composed "Queen of the Moon, Queen of the Stars" for Yule rituals.

Her early life was marked by significant changes and personal challenges. Born in 1922 in Colliers Wood, Surrey, she grew up in a conventional household. She claimed her parents were focused on social climbing. During her teenage years, she began practicing magic. She used books from her local library to learn. By age 13, she performed a spell to help her mother. This early interest led her to move through various parts of England. She eventually sought employment in factories and as a clerk.

During the Second World War, Valiente held a specialized role.

She worked as a translator at Bletchley Park. In this position, she was a Foreign Office Civilian Temporary Senior Assistant Officer. She was also involved in message decryption in London. During this period, she married twice. Her first husband, a Greek seaman, was lost at sea when his ship was sunk. She later married Casimiro Valiente, a Spaniard who had fought in the Spanish Civil War. This period of her life was defined by intense global conflict.

Valiente's formal entry into Wicca occurred in 1953. She discovered the tradition through an article in Illustrated magazine. This led her to contact Gerald Gardner, the founder of Gardnerian Wicca. She was initiated into the tradition during a Midsummer ritual.

Soon, she became the High Priestess of the Bricket Wood coven. She and Gardner formed a significant creative partnership. Valiente noticed that much of Gardner's material came from the occultist Aleister Crowley. She chose to rewrite these sections to protect the reputation of Wicca.

Her later years involved exploring many different spiritual paths and groups. In 1957, a schism caused her to leave Gardner to form a new coven. She was later initiated into the Coven of Atho in 1963. She also worked with Robert Cochrane in the Clan of Tubal Cain. Valiente was a dedicated advocate for the religion. She played leading roles in the Witchcraft Research Association and the Pagan Front. She also studied Earth mysteries and ley hunting. She lived in Brighton as a member of the Silver Malkin coven.

Valiente's influence extended to the way Wicca is practiced today. She was an early advocate for the idea of non-initiation. She believed that anyone could practice Wicca without a formal introduction by a previous Wiccan. This helped the religion grow more widely. She also contributed to the books of other Wiccans like Stewart and Janet Farrar. She served as a patron for the Centre for Pagan Studies. After her death from pancreatic cancer in 1999, her papers were preserved.
