André Rieu's musical foundation began in his childhood. He started studying the violin at only five years old. His father served as the conductor of the Maastricht Symphony Orchestra. Rieu pursued advanced training at several prestigious European institutions. He studied at the Conservatoire Royal in Liège and the Conservatorium Maastricht between 1968 and 1973. He later attended the Music Academy in Brussels until 1977. He graduated from the Royal Conservatory of Brussels with the distinction of "Premier Prix." This is a top honor for musical excellence. Today, he performs using a 1667 Stradivarius violin.

In 1987, Rieu established the Johann Strauss Orchestra. The group began with only 12 members. They held their inaugural concert on January 1, 1988. The orchestra has grown significantly over the decades. As of 2020, the ensemble consists of 50 to 60 musicians. Rieu and his orchestra tour globally. They perform in Europe, North and South America, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. Many of these performances take place in large stadiums.

Rieu's productions are famous for their massive scale. In 2008, his tour utilized a full-size reproduction of Empress Sisi's Castle. At that time, it was the largest touring stage in existence. His concerts are also major commercial successes. In 2011, his tour earned $67,104,756 in revenue across 102 shows. In 2015, he earned $51,151,367 from 101 shows. His popularity in the United Kingdom was so high that Sky Arts 2 renamed itself "Sky Arts Rieu" for two weeks in 2013.

His popularity is particularly strong in Australia. By December 2008, Rieu had achieved his 100th platinum accreditation there. Between 2006 and 2011, he was the highest-selling music artist in the Australian market. During this period, he sold over $50 million worth of wholesale CDs and DVDs. While he has a massive fanbase, some music critics offer different perspectives. Some critics in the UK described his work as "saccharine fodder." Others suggested his performances felt more like pop concerts than classical recitals.

Despite these criticisms, many argue that Rieu brings classical music to new audiences. Eamon Kelly noted that his focus on accessible repertoire is a positive way to introduce people to the classical canon. Rieu himself views the term "schmaltzy" as a compliment. He believes his goal is to provide a magical evening through total artistic immersion. This approach has earned him significant international recognition. He has received numerous high-level honors from various nations.
