He was born in Panama City in 1936. His family had to leave the country for a time. They lived in the United States and Argentina. Endara was a very smart student during these years. He later studied law at the University of Panama. He also went to New York University. He became a successful lawyer and helped start a law firm. He also served in the National Assembly of Panama.

In 1989, Endara ran for president against Manuel Noriega. Noriega was a military leader who ruled Panama. Endara led a group called the Democratic Alliance of Civic Opposition. This group wanted to bring democracy back to the country. Many people watched the election results very closely. International observers said Endara won by a large margin. However, the government refused to accept the results. This led to a very difficult time for the people in Panama.

Things became even harder for Endara during the protests. A group called the Dignity Battalions attacked him in the streets. They hit Endara with an iron club. He had to go to the hospital for stitches. These events were shown on news programs all over the world. This news helped people in the United States decide to take action. Seven months later, the United States invaded Panama. Endara was sworn in as president on December 20, 1989. He took his oath at a U.S. military base.

As president, Endara made several big changes to the country. He wanted to make sure the military did not rule the people. He worked to turn the military into a national police force. In 1994, the National Assembly officially ended the military. This made Panama the second country in Latin America to do this. The economy grew by about 8% each year during his term. However, many people still struggled to find jobs. Unemployment was near 19% during this time.

Endara's time in office had many ups and downs. He and his vice presidents had many disagreements. His popularity with the people also went down over time. He ran for president again in 2004 and 2009. He did not win those elections. He died in September 2009 at the age of 73. He died at his home in Panama City. He had a state funeral to honor his life. Many leaders from Panama attended his funeral.
