Mireya Moscoso is a famous leader from Panama. She was born on July 1, 1946, in a small place called Pedasí. Her family was quite poor, and she was the youngest of six children. When she was ten, her father, who was a teacher, passed away. After she finished high school, she started working as a secretary. Later in life, she took over a coffee business. She also became a leader in a political group called the Arnulfista Party.

Moscoso worked very hard to become president. In 1994, she ran for the top job in Panama. She lost that election to Ernesto Pérez Balladares by only 4% of the vote. She did not give up and ran again in 1999. This time, she won against Martín Torrijos. She won with 45% of the vote. This was a huge moment because she became the first female president of Panama.

Her time as president was full of big changes. On December 31, 1999, she oversaw a very important event. The United States handed control of the Panama Canal to Panama. This happened because of the Torrijos–Carter Treaties. After this, her government had to fix environmental problems in the Canal Zone. They had to deal with old chemicals and unexploded munitions left behind.

Being a leader is often a very difficult job. Moscoso faced many hard challenges during her years in office. The economy struggled because many American workers left the canal area. She also dealt with many scandals regarding how money was used. Some people criticized her for how she spent public money. Because of these problems, her popularity with the people went down.

Moscoso left the presidency in 2004. She could not run for a second term because of Panama's laws. Her rival, Martín Torrijos, won the next election to take her place. Even after leaving, she stayed active in politics. She joined a group for women leaders around the world. This group helps women who lead countries to be more effective. She continues to be a known figure in Panamanian history.
