As a young student, he studied at the University of the Andes. He even spent one year as an exchange student in the United States. His path to leadership involved many different jobs. At age 23, he became a councilman in Pereira. Four years later, he served as the mayor of that city. In 1974, he was elected to the Chamber of Representatives. He later served as a minister in the government of Virgilio Barco. He also helped lead the Colombian Liberal Party. Gaviria worked as a debate chief for Luis Carlos Galán during a campaign in 1989. After Galán was killed, Gaviria became the main candidate for the Liberal Party. As President of Colombia, Gaviria faced many hard jobs. He helped create a new Constitution in 1991. This set new rules for how the country works. He also led the fight against drug cartels and guerrilla groups. One famous leader, Pablo Escobar, was part of these groups. Gaviria's government built a prison called La Catedral for Escobar. However, Escobar escaped from that prison in July 1992. The government continued its work, and Escobar was killed in December 1993. This was seen as a big win for Gaviria's administration.

Life in Colombia was difficult for many people during this time. While the economy grew, 45 percent of Colombians lived in poverty. Many people lived in slums near big cities. There were also paramilitary groups that fought against guerrilla groups. These groups sometimes caused harm to many different people in the cities. In 1994, Gaviria's government created a group called Convivir. This was meant to help the army stay safe. However, some people said these groups were used by others for bad reasons.

He was reelected in 1999 to continue this work. He helped many countries in Latin America solve their problems. For example, he helped try to find peace in Venezuela between 2002 and 2003. Today, he is a member of the Club of Madrid. This is a group of over 100 former leaders who work to support democracy. His life shows how one person can work in many different ways to lead.
