Galo Plaza was a very important leader from Ecuador. He was born in New York City in 1906. His father, Leónidas Plaza, was also a president of Ecuador. Galo grew up learning about many different things. He studied farming at the University of Maryland. He also studied money at the University of California, Berkeley. Later, he studied how countries work together at Georgetown University.

Plaza had a long career in government. In 1938, he was the Minister of War for Ecuador. He also started a school called Colegio Americano de Quito in 1940. In 1944, he served as the Ambassador to the United States. He then became the President of Ecuador in 1948. He wanted to use new ideas to help his country grow. He asked experts to suggest ways to fix the government.

Being president was a very big job for him. He worked hard to keep the country's economy steady. During his time, Ecuador had a huge banana boom. This happened because other places had diseases in their banana plants. Ecuador became a top seller to the United States. Banana exports grew from 2 million dollars to 20 million dollars. This happened between 1948 and 1952.

Plaza also cared deeply about democracy. Democracy means people have rights and freedoms. He protected the freedom of the press. He let people share their opinions without fear. He also let people meet for politics without being jailed. He was a very special leader because he finished his whole term. He was the first president to do this since 1924.

After his presidency, Plaza helped the whole world. He worked for the United Nations as a mediator. A mediator is someone who helps different sides find peace. He helped during conflicts in Lebanon, the Congo, and Cyprus. In 1968, he became the leader of the Organization of American States. He died in a hospital in Quito in 1987. His family included a wife and six children.
