Alfaro worked hard to modernize his country. He introduced new ideas to Ecuadorian society. He helped create new systems for communication. One of his biggest jobs was building the Trans-Andean Railway. This huge train track linked Guayaquil with Quito. This project helped connect different parts of the land. He also built many new public schools. He believed that education should be free and secular. Secular means the government and religion are kept separate.

His political life was full of many big changes. He led the Liberal Revolution in 1895. This movement helped the liberals take power. Alfaro served as President from 1895 to 1901. Later, he served a second term from 1906 to 1911. During this time, he gave people freedom of speech. He also made civil marriage and divorce legal. He worked to make the nation more united. He also worked to protect the borders of Ecuador.

Alfaro faced many hard times during his life. He fought against several conservative presidents. He even lost his own money to pay for his battles. He once survived a shipwreck by clinging to a barrel. He also traveled to Central America during a time of exile. In Nicaragua, he was given the rank of "General de División." Even though he was not highly educated, he was very intelligent. He was a father to nine children with his wife, Ana Paredes Arosemena.

His life ended in a very sad way in 1912. On January 28, he was killed in the city of Quito. Many people in Ecuador still remember him today. His face is shown on the 50-cent coin. The Ecuadorian Army military college is also named after him. Two ships in the Navy carry his name too.
