Vicente Rocafuerte was a very important leader in Ecuador.

He lived during a time when many new nations were forming. He helped shape how his country worked. His life was full of big choices and changes. He worked hard to make his land free. He wanted a better future for all people. This made him a key figure in history.

His life followed a path of learning and fighting. First, he studied in Madrid and France to get an education. He returned to Ecuador in 1807 to help his people. He fought to end Spanish rule in his land. Later, he worked to free Ecuador from Gran Colombia. He even served in the National Congress for Pichincha Province. These steps helped him become a great leader.

Many years ago, Rocafuerte faced many hard jobs. He led an opposition against President Juan José Flores. Because of this, Flores sent him away to Peru. Rocafuerte came back and became Governor of Guayas Province. He tried to revolt against Flores but he lost. He was sent to prison for a time.

Many supporters respected him, so he made a deal to leave prison.

This deal led to his time as president. Rocafuerte was President of Ecuador from 1834 to 1839.

In 1835, he passed a new constitution for the country. A constitution is a set of rules for a nation. He also gave more protection to Native Americans. However, Flores later made new rules in 1843. Rocafuerte called these rules "The Letter of Slavery."

After his presidency, Rocafuerte stayed active in politics. He left Ecuador to protest the new rules. Later, he helped overthrow Flores on March 6, 1845.

He then served as President of the Senate in 1846. He also traveled as a special representative to other countries. He died on May 16, 1847. His work helped change how Ecuador was run.
