His life began in Buenos Aires on May 20, 1780. His father was a wealthy Spanish lawyer named Benito Bernardino González de Rivadavia. His mother was María Josefa de Jesús Rodríguez de Rivadeneyra. Rivadavia was active in the resistance against British invasions in 1806. He also took part in the May Revolution in 1810. In 1811, he became a powerful member of the government. He served as the Secretary of the Treasury and Secretary of War.

In 1826, Rivadavia was elected as the first President of Argentina. At that time, the country was called the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata. His time in office was very difficult. There was a war with Brazil over land in Uruguay. Many people in other provinces also fought against his government. They did not want a strong central power in Buenos Aires. Because of these many problems, he resigned on June 27, 1827.
