Guayaquil's name has several interesting possible origins. The term "Guayaquil" is pre-Hispanic, meaning it existed before Spanish arrival. One theory links the name to a local leader named Guayaquile. Archeologists believe the region was once occupied by the Chonos people. This group is also known as the Cultura Milagro-Quevedo. Another romantic legend suggests the name combines the names of a leader, Guayas, and his wife, Quil.

The Spanish established the city definitively in 1547. It was originally intended to be a shipyard and trade port for the Spanish Empire. Its official title was the "Muy Noble y Muy Leal Ciudad de Santiago de Guayaquil." The name "Santiago" honors the patron saint of Spain.

Throughout the colonial era, the city was a key node in global trade. It served as a stopover for Manila galleons traveling between Asia and Latin America.

History shows that Guayaquil has faced many difficult moments. In 1687, English and French pirates attacked and looted the city. Later, in 1709, English captains demanded a ransom from the residents. An epidemic of yellow fever eventually caused the pirates to depart. The city also saw significant political shifts. In 1820, Guayaquil became the first Ecuadorian city to achieve independence from Spain.

This event led to the creation of the Free Province of Guayaquil.

Today, the city is a massive urban center with a large population. The city itself has 2,746,403 inhabitants. When including the surrounding metropolitan area, the population reaches 3,618,450.
