The history of the region began with the dispersal of Paleo-Indians. This likely occurred between 16,500 and 13,000 years ago near the end of the last glacial period. These early people may have traveled by land from North and Central America. Others might have arrived by boat along the Pacific coastline. These groups developed diverse cultures based on their specific environments. Coastal peoples combined agriculture with fishing and hunting. People in the highland Andes developed sedentary agricultural lifestyles. In the Amazon basin, people relied on hunting, gathering, and sometimes arboriculture.

By 250 B.C., these civilizations had contact with Austronesian explorers from Southeast Asia. These explorers brought the Pacific Coconut to the region. Eventually, the Inca Empire expanded into the area. It took two generations of Inca rulers, Topa Inca Yupanqui and Huayna Capac, to absorb the local confederations. The ruins of Ingapirca serve as a reminder of this era.

Spanish colonization began in the 16th century. This period brought significant changes and hardships for the indigenous population. European diseases like smallpox caused high fatalities because the native people had no immunity. The Spanish also implemented the encomienda labor system. In 1563, Quito became the seat of a real audiencia, which was an administrative district. The path to independence was long and difficult. On August 10, 1809, leaders in Quito called for independence. This event earned Quito the nickname "Luz de América," or "Light of America."

During the 19th century, the country experienced political instability with many different rulers. Notable leaders included the first president, Juan José Flores. In the 1860s, Gabriel García Moreno helped unify the country. Significant social changes occurred later in the century. Ecuador abolished slavery in 1851. In 1857, the government also abolished indigenous tribute. This made indigenous people equal under the law. They became property holders and taxpayers like everyone else. The Liberal Revolution of 1895 further reduced the power of the clergy and conservative landowners.
