This location makes it a vital link for international trade. The city is located within the province of Panama. Its metropolitan area is quite large and crowded. It contains over 2,100,000 people. The history of the city began on August 15, 1519. A Spanish conquistador named Pedro Arias Dávila founded the settlement. It quickly became a crucial starting point for many expeditions. These explorers used the city to conquer the Inca Empire in Peru. The city also served as a major transit point for precious metals. Gold and silver from the Americas passed through here toward Spain. This happened via trade routes leading to the fairs of Nombre de Dios and Portobelo. In 1671, the city faced a major disaster. A privateer named Henry Morgan sacked the settlement with 1,400 men.

A massive fire subsequently destroyed the original city.

Following the destruction, the city was formally reestablished in 1673. This new settlement was built on a peninsula southwest of the original site. This area is known today as Casco Viejo, or the Old Quarter.

These styles reflect the different groups that lived in the city during the canal construction.

The 19th and 20th centuries brought massive changes to the region. The Panama Railroad Company was formed just before the California Gold Rush. The railroad began full operations in 1855. This era saw huge amounts of human movement across the isthmus. Between 1848 and 1869, 375,000 people traveled from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Another 225,000 people traveled in the opposite direction. This heavy traffic increased the city's prosperity significantly. Later, the United States gained control of a 10-mile-wide strip of land for the canal. This was settled through the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty of 1903.

The canal was eventually completed in 1914.

Construction of the canal brought both progress and social challenges. One major success was the improvement of public health. William Gorgas served as the chief sanitary officer during construction. He hypothesized that mosquitoes spread tropical diseases. He ordered the fumigation of homes and the cleansing of water. This work helped eradicate yellow fever by November 1905. It also caused malaria rates to fall dramatically.

However, the arrival of many Caribbean laborers caused racial and social tensions. These tensions eventually led to events known as Martyrs' Day in 1964. Eventually, the United States transferred full control of the canal to Panama in 1999.

Today, Panama City is a major center for the global economy. It is a service-based economy focused on banking, commerce, and tourism. The city is responsible for about 55% of the country's GDP. There are approximately eighty banks operating within the city.

This park is home to animals like pumas, tapirs, and caimans. Tropical forests are essential for the canal's operation. They provide the water necessary for the transit route. The Río Chagres is a vital river in this system. Part of this river was dammed to create Gatun Lake. This lake forms a major part of the canal route. The city also experiences a tropical savanna climate. It has a wet season from May to December and a dry season from January to April.
