This banana was very good for shipping. It had a thick peel. This peel kept the fruit from getting bruised. The bananas also grew in dense bunches. This made them easy to move on ships.

In the 1950s, a big change happened. A sickness called Panama disease hit the plants. This sickness is a wilt caused by a fungus. A fungus is a tiny living thing. The disease wiped out many large farms. Because of this, farmers started growing a new kind. This new kind is called the Cavendish.

The Gros Michel had a very strong taste. It had a lot of isoamyl acetate. This is a compound that gives bananas their smell. Many fake banana flavors use this same smell. Some people say the Gros Michel tasted even stronger than the Cavendish. Even though it is rare now, it still grows on safe land.
