Cavendish banana

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Cavendish is a type of banana. Most bananas in stores are this kind.

These bananas grow on plants. Some plants are small, like the Dwarf Cavendish. Others are called Grand Nain. This is the type used for Chiquita bananas.

When you buy them, the skin is often green. As the fruit ripens, the skin turns yellow. This happens because starch turns into sugar. This makes the fruit taste sweet.

Some bananas turn brown or black as they get very ripe.

These plants are special because they have no seeds. They make new plants by cloning. Cloning means making an exact copy of a plant.

Because they are all copies, they are not very different from each other. This is a problem for the plants.

Many Cavendish plants grow close together in large groups. This makes them easy for sickness to spread. A fungus called Panama disease can hurt them. This disease was a big problem for other bananas long ago. Now, the disease is attacking Cavendish plants too. Scientists are trying to find new ways to save them.
