It is the third most common type of rat in the world. Many people call it the Pacific rat. It started in Southeast Asia. It moved to many islands in the Pacific. This includes Hawaii and New Zealand. These rats are good at living in many places. They can live in forests or grasslands.

This rat looks like other rats. It has large, round ears and a pointed snout. Its hair is black or brown. Its belly is a lighter color. The rat has a thin body. It can grow up to 25 centimeters long. On small islands, these rats are often even smaller.

These rats are nocturnal. This means they are active at night. They are also great at climbing trees. They eat many things. They eat seeds, fruit, and leaves. They also eat insects, lizards, and bird eggs. They often take food to a safe place. They do this to shell seeds or hide from rain.

These rats can be a problem for nature. They eat the eggs of native birds. On Easter Island, they may have eaten palm tree nuts. This stopped new trees from growing. In New Zealand, people work to remove rats from islands. This helps rare birds stay safe.
