life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Rails are a large family of birds. They live on every continent except Antarctica. Most rails live near water. They like marshes, rice paddies, and flooded fields. They love thick plants for nesting.

Many rails have short, round wings. They are not strong fliers. Because of this, they often prefer to run. Some rails live on islands. On these islands, many rails became flightless. This means they lost the power to fly.

Losing flight helps them save power. Flying uses a lot of energy. On islands without predators, they do not need to fly far. This helps them survive when food is hard to find.

Rails can be very shy. They stay hidden in thick grass. They use loud calls to talk. This helps them find others in dark or thick places.

Some rails are in danger. Humans changed the land on many islands. New animals like cats and rats were also brought there. This makes it hard for some rails to stay safe.
