This banana was very good for shipping to far places. It has a thick peel. This peel helps the fruit stay safe from bruises during travel. The bananas also grow in dense bunches. This makes them easy to ship on big boats.

This banana works well for farmers who sell fruit. The thick skin is a strong layer. It protects the fruit while it moves. The way they grow in tight bunches is helpful too.

This makes it easy to pack them for transport. Because of these traits, it was the main export for a long time. It was a very successful crop for many years.

History shows how this banana moved around the world. In 1919, a naturalist named Nicolas Baudin carried corms from Southeast Asia. He put them in a garden on Martinique. Later, a botanist named Jean François Pouyat moved them to Jamaica in 1835.

In Jamaica, they were called "Poyo." We do not know where the name "Gros Michel" came from. They were grown on huge farms in Honduras and Costa Rica.

In the 1950s, a big problem changed everything. A sickness called Panama disease hit the plants.

This wilt is caused by a fungus called Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cubense. The fungus wiped out many large farms in Central America. By the 1960s, exporters could not keep trading this type of banana. They began growing a new kind called the Cavendish. The Cavendish is part of the same Musa acuminata group.

You might know the smell of banana candy. That smell often comes from a compound called isoamyl acetate. The Gros Michel has a lot of this compound. It has more than the Cavendish banana does.

Some say it tastes like a very strong version of a Cavendish. A famous 1922 song even talked about a lack of bananas. This song was inspired by the shortage caused by the disease. Even today, it still grows on land that is not infected.
