It is the main ancestor of many sweet dessert bananas we eat today. This plant is not actually a tree. Botanists call it an herbaceous plant because it has a soft stem. This stem is called a pseudostem. It is made of many leaf layers packed tightly together. The plant grows from a part called a corm that is buried in the ground.

Growing a banana follows a very interesting way it works. The plant grows white or yellowish-white flowers on a stalk. These flowers grow away from the ground. Both male and female flowers live on the same stalk. The female flowers are near the base of the stalk. These flowers eventually grow into the fruit we recognize. The male flowers stay at the very top inside leathery covers. It takes about four months for these flowers to become fruit.

Humans have a very long history with this plant. People first began to grow it around 8000 BCE. This makes it one of the first plants ever domesticated by humans. An Italian scientist named Luigi Aloysius Colla first described it in 1820. He was the first to realize it was a wild ancestor. He wrote about it in a book about science in Torino. His name is still the official one used by scientists today.

Wild bananas look quite different from the ones in your kitchen. A wild banana is a berry with many hard seeds. Each fruit can have between 15 and 62 seeds. These seeds are often angular or round in shape. Most modern bananas are triploid, which means they have 33 chromosomes. They are also parthenocarpic, which is a way to grow fruit without seeds. In these types, the seeds are just tiny black specks. This allows the fruit to have much more edible pulp.

This plant plays a big role in nature and in our lives. It is a pioneer species that grows fast in new areas. It helps other living things move in by providing food. Many animals love to eat the fruit. This includes birds, monkeys, bats, and even squirrels. People also grow some types just to look at them. For example, the 'blood banana' has beautiful dark red patches on its leaves.
