These relatives share 25% of their genetic material with their grandchildren. This connection grows as you look further back in time. Every living thing that reproduces has a set number of genetic grandparents. You have 4 genetic grandparents and 8 great-grandparents. You also have 16 great-great-grandparents and 32 great-great-great-grandparents.

History shows that the role of grandparents changed a long time ago. Around 30,000 years ago, more modern humans began living long enough to be grandparents. Experts do not know exactly why this happened. However, they believe it helped families keep important information alive. For example, grandparents could teach others where to find water during a drought. This knowledge helped the whole group survive.

In South Korea, grandparents care for 53% of children under age 6. In China, about 58% of grandparents aged 45 or older help with childcare. This often happens because more mothers are working in jobs. It also happens because people are living longer lives. In Singapore, the government even offers tax relief to help families with these costs.

There are different ways grandparents can help a family. Some are nonresident grandparents who live in a different house. They might help by picking up children from school. Other grandparents are co-resident, meaning they live in the same home.
