A family tree is a special chart used to show how people are related. You might also hear it called a pedigree chart or a genealogical tree. These charts use a tree shape to show many generations of a family.

Sometimes, doctors or social workers use even more detailed versions called genograms. Most trees put the oldest people at the top and the youngest at the bottom. However, an ancestry chart might be wider at the top to show many ancestors. A descendant chart works the opposite way by showing everyone who came from one person.

There are several clever ways to organize these family records. One method is called an Ahnentafel, which is a German word for "ancestor table."

This system uses numbers to list direct ancestors in a specific order. In this list, even numbers are always male and odd numbers are always female. Another popular way to see a family is with a fan chart.

This looks like a half-circle with rings that grow outward. The person you are studying sits in the middle circle. Each ring shows more parents and grandparents in a beautiful pattern.

People have been tracking their history for a very long time. The idea of a tree shape might come from medieval art. This art used a "Tree of Jesse" to show the family of Christ.

Later, in 1360, a writer named Boccaccio showed the family trees of ancient gods. This was one of the first times people showed full family relationships. In many parts of the world, history was shared in different ways. In Africa, members of the Keita dynasty in Mali had their family stories sung by griots. These storytellers performed these songs during ceremonies starting in the 14th century.

Some family trees are incredibly large and span many centuries. The longest family tree in the world belongs to the philosopher Confucius.

His tree spans more than 80 generations and includes over 2 million members. In 1998, a group started a huge project to update this tree. They worked with 450 branches around the world to find everyone. By 2009, a new edition was printed to celebrate his birth anniversary. This edition expected to include about 1.3 million living members of his family.

Family trees help us connect our own lives to the deep past. In the Roman world, family lines were a very important part of society. Many noble families in Europe and West Asia can trace their roots back many hundreds of years. Some families, like the Lurie lineage, are known as some of the oldest living families. In the Islamic world, scholars began writing down family histories to keep important records. These charts show us that we are all part of a much larger story. They turn names and dates into a map of human life.
