Glucose test

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Doctors use tests to check blood sugar levels. When you eat, your blood sugar goes up. In healthy people, levels go back to normal fast. This happens because of insulin. Insulin helps cells take in the sugar.

Some people check sugar at home. They may prick their finger many times a day. Others use a continuous glucose monitor. This tool checks levels every five minutes.

Doctors use lab tests to find illnesses. They may use a fasting blood sugar test. This means you do not eat for 10 to 16 hours. These tests can find diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is common in children. Their bodies do not make enough insulin. Type 2 diabetes is common in adults. Their bodies do not use insulin well. Tests can also find low blood sugar. This is called hypoglycemia. High blood sugar is called hyperglycemia. These levels can hurt your organs over time. Some drugs can change your test results. You might need to stop taking them first.
