Comprehensive metabolic panel

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A doctor can run a group of blood tests. This is called a comprehensive metabolic panel. It is also known as a CMP. This test checks many parts of your body. It looks at how your liver works. It also checks your kidneys.

The CMP looks at your electrolytes. These are things like sodium and potassium. They help keep your fluids in balance. The test also checks your glucose. Glucose is a type of sugar in your blood. This helps find diabetes.

Before the test, you may need to fast. This means you do not eat for ten or twelve hours. Fasting helps the sugar test work well. The tests use a special machine. These machines are based on an old design from 1957.

Sometimes, the test results are not right. This is called a false positive. It means the test looks wrong even if you are healthy. A doctor might need to do the test again. They may also use a more specific test to be sure.
