To get a sample, a nurse or doctor uses a needle. They often take blood from a vein in your arm. This is called venipuncture. Sometimes they only need a few drops. They can use a quick fingerprick for this.

During venipuncture, a special tube uses a vacuum to pull blood in.

Tests can look for many things. A blood panel is a group of tests done at once. One panel might check your sugar or salt levels. Some tests need you to fast. This means you do not eat for eight to twelve hours before.

Tests can also check your organs. A liver function test shows how your liver works. Other tests check your kidneys. Scientists can even use blood to look at your DNA. DNA is the code that makes you who you are. This helps doctors find and treat sickness.
