Blood test

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Blood tests are very important tools in health care. They help doctors learn about how your body is working. Blood flows all through your body to carry oxygen and nutrients to your tissues. It also carries waste products away to be cleaned out. Because blood touches so many parts of the body, it shows many health details.

Doctors use these tests to check for disease or organ function. They can even see if a medicine is working well.

To start a test, a person must first get a blood sample. A phlebotomist, a nurse, or a doctor can do this. They often use a needle to take blood from a vein in your arm. This process is called venipuncture.

During this, a special tube called a Vacutainer uses a vacuum to pull the blood in. If a doctor only needs a few drops, they might use a fingerstick instead. Some special tests even require taking blood from an artery.

There are many different kinds of blood tests you can have. A blood panel is a group of tests done all at once. One common type is a basic metabolic panel. This measures things like sodium, potassium, and glucose.

Some tests check your cholesterol levels to see your LDL and HDL. Some of these tests require fasting. This means you must not eat for eight to twelve hours before the test. This helps make sure the results are accurate.

Scientists use blood to find many different things. A complete blood count, or CBC, looks at fifteen different readings. This helps show your overall health. Other tests can look at your DNA to find certain disorders.

Blood tests can also find food allergies or autoimmune diseases. Even the liver and kidneys can be checked with specific tests. These tests show how well your organs are processing waste and proteins.

New technology is making blood testing even better. In 2008, scientists said saliva might replace some blood tests. This is because saliva has 20% of the proteins found in blood.

In 2011, researchers in Canada announced a tiny microchip for blood tests. This is called a microemulsion. Another team created a system called SIMBAS. This lab-on-a-chip can diagnose diseases in just ten minutes. These new tools might make testing faster and cheaper for everyone.
