Glucose test

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Glucose tests help us check blood sugar levels. Sugar in the blood is very important for life. When you eat food, your blood sugar levels go up. Healthy bodies bring these levels back to normal quickly. This happens because of insulin in the blood. Insulin helps cells take in the sugar for energy.

There are many ways to perform these tests. Some people check their sugar at home. They might use a fingerprick glucose meter. This means they prick their finger 8 to 12 times a day. Others use a continuous glucose monitor, or CGM. This tool checks sugar levels every five minutes.

Doctors use special lab tests to find illnesses. One way is the fasting blood sugar test. You must not eat for 10 to 16 hours first. Another way is the glucose tolerance test. A random glucose test checks sugar at any time. Some tests look at glycated hemoglobin in the blood.

These tests can find many different medical conditions. High sugar is called hyperglycemia. Low sugar is called hypoglycemia. Both can damage organs over a long time. Tests can find Type 1 diabetes in children. It happens when bodies do not make enough insulin. Type 2 diabetes is common in overweight adults.

Preparing for a test is a very important step. Some drugs can change your blood sugar results. You might need to stop taking aspirin or lithium. Some people should also avoid caffeine before a test. Caffeine can raise sugar levels in people with diabetes. This happens because it stimulates the nervous system.
