This blood can be used for transfusions to help sick people. It can also be used to make special medicines. This part of the process is called fractionation, which means separating the blood into different pieces.

Some people give all their blood at once. Others use a method called apheresis to give only specific parts.

This helps make sure there is always enough for everyone who needs it.

There are several different ways that blood is collected and used. An allogeneic donation is when someone gives blood to a bank for any person who might need it.

A directed donation is different because it goes to one specific person, like a family member. Some people choose an autologous donation. This is when a person stores their own blood to use later, perhaps during a surgery.

In some places, people might even be paid for their donation. In other countries, people mostly give blood as a way to help their community. Most donors in the developed world are unpaid volunteers who want to help others.

Before anyone can donate, they must go through a careful screening process.

Doctors want to make sure the blood is safe for the next person. They ask questions about medical history and perform a short physical exam. They also test the blood for diseases like HIV or viral hepatitis.

If a person does not meet the rules, they are called "deferred." This just means they might be allowed to donate again at a later time. Donating is generally safe, though some people might feel a little faint or get a bruise where the needle went in.

Learning how to save blood has taken a long time. In 1914, doctors Albert Hustin and Luis Agote performed early transfusions using a special liquid to keep the blood from clotting.
