A complete blood count is a common medical test. It is also called a CBC. This test looks at the cells in your blood.

Doctors use a CBC to check your health. They count three main parts. First, they count red blood cells. These cells carry oxygen. Second, they count white blood cells. These help your body fight germs. Third, they count platelets. These small parts help stop bleeding.

Most labs use a fast machine called an analyzer. This machine uses the Coulter principle. This is a way to count cells using electricity. The machine sees how cells change the flow of power. It also measures hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the part of red cells that carries oxygen.

Sometimes, a person must check the blood by hand. They make a blood smear. This is a thin layer of blood on a slide. A person looks at it under a microscope. This helps them see the shape of the cells. It can find things like anemia. Anemia is when you do not have enough healthy red cells.
