Scientists call them leukocytes. These cells fight off germs and diseases. They are larger than red blood cells. All white blood cells have a nucleus. A nucleus is a central part of a cell.

Your body makes these cells in the bone marrow. This is the soft part inside your bones.

There are many different types of white blood cells.

Neutrophils are the most common type. They are often the first to fight bacteria. Some cells are phagocytic. This means they can eat up germs. Monocytes are also phagocytic. They act like tiny vacuum cleaners. They can live for a long time.

Other cells have special jobs. Eosinophils help fight large parasites. Basophils release a chemical called histamine. This helps blood flow to an injury. Lymphocytes are very important too. They include B cells and T cells. B cells make antibodies to block germs. T cells can kill cells that have viruses.
