There are two main types of diabetes. In Type 1 diabetes, the body cannot make insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps cells take in sugar. People with Type 1 must take insulin through shots. They might use a small pump for this. Some insulin works fast. Other types work for a long time. One kind, called insulin degludec, can work for 42 hours!

Type 2 diabetes is the most common kind. In this type, the body has trouble using insulin. This is called insulin resistance. Doctors use many ways to treat it. Some pills help the body use insulin better. These are called sensitizers. One common pill is Metformin. It is often the first choice for many people.

Other medicines help the pancreas make more insulin. These are called secretagogues. Some medicines even help the body get rid of sugar through pee. Doctors pick the best medicine for each person. They look at the person's age and their health.
