This beetle is very special to scientists. They study it to learn about sexual dimorphism. This term means that males and females look different. In this species, the males have much longer necks.

These long necks help the males in many ways. They use their necks for combat with other males. The necks also help them attract a mate. They can use them to build nests. They also use them to find resources. To find a partner, a male performs a dance. He sways his long neck back and forth. This shows off his bright red colors to the female. She watches the dance to decide if she likes him.

Scientists first described this beetle in 1860. A person named Henri Jekel gave it its name.

It belongs to a group of beetles called Attelabidae. There is another beetle with the same name. That one lives in New Zealand. It is called the New Zealand giraffe weevil. It has a different scientific name, Lasiorhynchus barbicornis.

These weevils spend their whole lives in forest trees. They eat the leaves of those trees.

The females do something very clever to help their babies. A female rolls up a leaf into a tube. She lays one single egg inside that leaf tube. Then she snips the leaf off the tree. The leaf falls to the forest floor. The baby larva eats the leaf for food. Birds and small mammals like lemurs may eat them. A fossa is another animal that might eat them.

People in Madagascar use these beetles in their culture. They use them as a form of art. Some people use them for decor or jewelry.
