He lived during a time called the Italian Enlightenment. Vico was many things, such as a philosopher and a historian. He also studied law and how to speak well. He was born in Naples on June 23, 1668. Vico spent much of his life teaching at the University of Naples. He even worked as a royal historian for King Charles III.

Vico had a very interesting way of learning. When he was seven years old, he had an accidental fall. This caused him to stay home from school for three years. During that time, he learned a lot from his own reading. This makes him an autodidact, which is a person who teaches themselves. He later graduated from the University of Naples in 1694. He earned a degree as a Doctor of Civil and Canon Law.

One of Vico's biggest ideas was about how we find truth. He used a famous phrase: "truth is itself something made."

This means we understand things better when we create them. He disagreed with thinkers like René Descartes. Descartes thought we should use math-like rules to find truth. Vico thought this was hard to use in real life. He believed people should use "common sense" to understand the world. This helps people deal with the messy parts of human life.

Vico wrote a very important book in 1725. The title of this book is "Scienza Nuova," or "New Science."

In this book, he tries to explain how human societies work. He believed that societies move in cycles. This means they rise up and then they eventually fall down. He wanted to show how the humanities could be studied like a science. This helped start a new way of looking at the history of human ideas.

Many famous people have looked at Vico's work over the years. The thinker Karl Marx studied Vico's ideas about history. Even the writer Samuel Beckett was influenced by his work. In the 1970s, a scholar named Edward Said also credited Vico. Vico's ideas help us understand how humans build their own worlds. He showed that our laws, stories, and cultures are things we make together.
