He was a philosopher, historian, rhetorician, and jurist. Vico is often recognized as one of the first Counter-Enlightenment figures. He challenged the growing dominance of modern rationalism during his lifetime. He specifically criticized the reductionism found in Cartesian analysis. Vico believed such methods were impractical for understanding human life. Instead, he championed the humanities and the values of classical antiquity.

\n\nVico’s early life shaped his unique approach to learning. He was born in Naples on June 23, 1668. His father was a bookseller, which provided early access to texts. After an accidental fall at age seven, Vico missed three years of school. During this time, he became an autodidact, meaning he taught himself. He eventually graduated from the University of Naples in 1694. He earned a degree as a Doctor of Civil and Canon Law.

\n\nHis professional career involved teaching and royal service. He worked as a tutor in Vatolla for nine years. In 1699, he married his childhood friend, Teresa Caterina Destito. Vico later held a chair in rhetoric at the University of Naples. He held this position until his retirement in 1741 due to ill health. In 1734, King Charles III of Naples appointed him historiographer royal. This royal position provided a salary greater than his university professorship.

\n\nA central part of Vico's work was his theory of rhetoric. He viewed rhetoric as a tool for civic and public life. He believed speakers should master the art of topics to defend arguments. Vico connected rhetoric to logic and dialectic through Aristotelian traditions. He emphasized the importance of *sensus communis*, or common sense. This is the \"worldly sense\" shared by all human beings. He argued that true oratory should draw from this shared sense.

\n\nVico famously disagreed with the methods of René Descartes. Descartes promoted a \"geometrical method\" based on strict, verifiable axioms. This method sought truth through observation and mathematical-style reasoning. Vico argued this was unsuitable for the complexities of human affairs. He noted that human life is full of chance and caprice. Trying to apply rigid geometric rules to politics is impractical. Instead, Vico advocated for *phronēsis*, which is practical wisdom.

\n\nHis most famous contribution is the principle of *verum esse ipsum factum*. This Latin phrase means \"truth is itself something made.\"

This concept is an early example of constructivist epistemology. It suggests that we can truly know what we have created. For example, we can understand human institutions because humans built them. This differs from the Cartesian view of observing external truths. Vico applied this logic to his massive work, *Scienza Nuova*.

\n\nPublished in 1725, *Scienza Nuova* (New Science) is his intellectual masterpiece. In this book, he organized the humanities into a single science. He attempted to explain the historical cycles of human societies. He argued that societies rise and fall in predictable patterns. This work helped inaugurate the modern field of the philosophy of history. It
