Vassiliou had a very international early life. He was born on May 20, 1931, in Famagusta, British Cyprus. His father was an ophthalmologist and his mother was a dentist. The family moved to Greece but returned to Cyprus in 1941. This move happened because of the Nazi invasion of Greece. Later, the family lived in Hungary and Soviet Uzbekistan. These travels were caused by the Greek Civil War. Vassiliou eventually studied economics in Budapest. He earned a doctorate from the Karl Marx University of Economic Sciences. He later fled Hungary after the Soviet invasion in 1956. He finished his studies at the University of London.

Before entering politics, Vassiliou was a successful entrepreneur. He founded the Middle East Market Research Bureau. This consultancy business became very successful. It grew to include offices in the Middle East and South Africa. It also expanded into eastern and central Europe. He led this company until 1988. He also published the first book about marketing in the Middle East. He taught at the Cranfield School of Management. He was a frequent speaker at many international conferences.

As President of Cyprus, Vassiliou led major economic reforms. He wanted to align the Cypriot economy with European standards. To do this, he introduced Value Added Tax, or VAT. This was a significant change for the country. He also cut certain taxes to prevent tax evasion. These reforms helped the economy grow significantly. During his term, the per capita gross domestic product doubled. He also modernized public administration by using new technologies. He helped establish the University of Cyprus in 1992. He even opened up the media by allowing private radio stations.

Vassiliou also dedicated much of his presidency to the Cyprus dispute. This is a long-standing political problem on the island. He worked within the United Nations framework to find a solution. In 1988, he met with British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. He expressed his opposition to a two-state solution. He also discussed the British bases at Akrotiri and Dhekelia. In August 1990, he met Rauf Denktaş in Geneva. This was a meeting between him and the president of Northern Cyprus. In 1992, the UN Security Council provided a draft resolution. However, Turkey refused a plan that included returning certain areas. This failure meant the diplomatic plan did not succeed in 1994.

After his presidency, Vassiliou remained active in public life. He founded the Free Democrats Movement in 1993. This group later merged to form the United Democrats. He served in the Cypriot House of Representatives from 1996 to 2001. He was also named the Chief Negotiator for Cyprus. He held this role until 2003 to help the country join the European Union. He was a member of the European Council on Tolerance and Reconciliation. He also helped promote European unity during times of currency trouble.
