He served as the Chancellor of Germany from 1982 to 1998. This sixteen-year tenure is the longest in German post-war history. It is also the longest period for any democratically elected German chancellor. Kohl also led the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) for twenty-five years.

He is best known for overseeing the end of the Cold War. He also managed German reunification and the creation of the European Union (EU).

Kohl was born on April 3, 1930, in Ludwigshafen, Germany.

He grew up in a conservative, Catholic family. During his childhood, he was part of the Deutsches Jungvolk. In April 1945, he was sworn into the Hitler Youth by Artur Axmann. This occurred just days before the end of World War II. Kohl was also drafted for military service in 1945. However, he did not participate in combat, which he called the "mercy of late birth."

After the war, Kohl focused on his education. He studied law in Frankfurt am Main before switching to Heidelberg University.

At Heidelberg, he studied history and political science. He earned a PhD in history in 1958. His dissertation examined political developments in the Palatinate after 1945. Before entering full-time politics, Kohl worked as a business executive. He served as an assistant at a foundry and later as a manager for the Industrial Union for Chemistry.

Kohl's political career began in 1946 when he joined the CDU.

He rose through local and state positions very quickly. In 1959, he became the youngest member of the Landtag of Rhineland-Palatinate. From 1969 to 1976, he served as the minister president of that state. During this time, he acted as a reformer. He abolished corporal punishment in schools and founded the University of Trier-Kaiserslautern. In 1973, he was elected national chairman of the CDU, a role he held until 1998.

Kohl became Chancellor in 1982 through a constructive vote of no confidence.

This happened after the social-liberal government lost the support of the FDP. As leader, Kohl focused on European integration and the Franco-German relationship. He was a strong ally of the United States and supported Ronald Reagan's policies. He also chaired the G7 summit in 1985 and 1992. His leadership helped guide Europe through massive political shifts.

One of Kohl's most significant achievements was the reunification of Germany in 1990.

This followed the Revolutions of 1989 which ended the Cold War era. Kohl also worked with French President François Mitterrand to create the Maastricht Treaty.

This treaty established the European Union and the Euro currency. Additionally, his government helped Croatia, Slovenia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina gain international recognition. He also played a key role in resolving the Bosnian War.

Domestically, Kohl managed the integration of former East Germany into the reunified nation. He also moved the federal capital from Bonn back to Berlin. Although the government offices moved in 1999, Kohl never lived in Berlin. He also increased federal spending on arts and culture. In 1998, his reputation was damaged by the CDU donations scandal. This led to his resignation as honorary chairman of the CDU in 2000.

Kohl received many honors for his work in Europe. He won the Charlemagne Prize in 1988. In 1998, the European Council named him an Honorary Citizen of Europe.

US presidents George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton called him a great European leader.
