As a member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), he played a vital role in shaping modern German history. He was known for his expertise in economics and his energetic approach to international diplomacy. Schmidt was the longest-lived chancellor in German history. He also maintained the longest post-chancellorship, remaining active in public life for over 33 years after leaving office.

Schmidt's early life was marked by the intense political shifts of the early 20th century. He was born in 1918 in the Barmbek district of Hamburg. His father, Gustav Ludwig Schmidt, was the biological son of a Jewish banker named Ludwig Gumpel. This family secret remained private until Schmidt confirmed it publicly in 1984. During his youth, Schmidt was a member of the Hitler Youth organization. However, he was demoted in 1936 because of his anti-Nazi views. During World War II, he served in the military and saw action on the Eastern Front in 1941. He later served as an Oberleutnant in the Flak artillery. In April 1945, he was captured by British forces and became a prisoner of war in Belgium.

After the war, Schmidt focused on his education and began a career in public service. He graduated from the University of Hamburg in 1949 with degrees in economics and political science. He joined the SPD in 1946 and eventually became a leader in student politics. In the early 1960s, he served as the Senator of the Interior for the city-state of Hamburg. He gained a reputation as a "doer" during the devastating Hamburg flood of 1962. To manage the emergency, he used the federal police and army units to help citizens. This decisive action helped save approximately 1,000 lives during the disaster.

Schmidt moved into federal politics through several high-level ministerial roles. He served as the Minister of Defence from 1969 to 1972 under Chancellor Willy Brandt. During this time, he reduced military conscription from 18 to 15 months. He also established Bundeswehr universities to improve the education of officers. From 1972 to 1974, he served as the Minister of Finance. In this role, he managed the challenges of rising inflation. He also helped coordinate how European currencies would float against the U.S. dollar. These roles prepared him for the highest office in West Germany.

As Chancellor, Schmidt navigated a period of significant global economic instability. He faced a worldwide recession and took a disciplined approach to reducing public spending. He worked closely with international leaders to foster cooperation. For example, he worked with French President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing to create the first world economic summits in 1975.

Schmidt's leadership was tested by domestic terrorism and international conflicts. In 1977, he dealt with the hijacking of a Lufthansa aircraft named Landshut by the Red Army Faction. He ordered a specialized police unit to intervene in Somalia to rescue the passengers. The mission was successful, and all 86 passengers were rescued unharmed. He also dealt with tensions regarding nuclear weapons. In 1981, he supported the NATO Double-Track Decision to deploy missiles in Europe. This decision was controversial and led to mass demonstrations by 400,000 people.

Economically, Schmidt used Keynesian policies to address rising unemployment. These policies involved expansionary monetary and fiscal measures. Between 1979 and 1982, these efforts were moderately successful in creating jobs. It is estimated that his fiscal measures created 160,000 to 300,000 additional jobs during 1978 and 1979. However, these programs also led to a larger budget deficit. The deficit rose from 31.2 billion DM in 1977 to 75.7 billion DM in 1981. Despite these complexities, West Germany managed to keep inflation and unemployment lower than many other developed nations during the 1970s. Schmidt's career remains a central study in how leaders manage economic crises and international security.
