George's life took him to many different countries. He was born in Famagusta in 1931. His family lived in Greece until 1941. They had to move because of the Nazi invasion of Greece. Later, his family lived in Hungary and Soviet Uzbekistan. He studied medicine in Geneva, but he had to stop his studies. This happened because his father volunteered as a doctor during the Greek Civil War. George eventually moved to Budapest to study economics. As president, George worked hard to change the economy. He wanted Cyprus to match European standards. He introduced a tax called VAT to help with this goal. This was a hard job, and some people rejected it. He also helped the economy grow by cutting certain taxes. During his time, the per capita gross domestic product doubled. He helped start the University of Cyprus in 1992. He also helped bring new technology to public administration.

In 1990, he and the leader of Northern Cyprus, Rauf Denktaş, met in Geneva. He also met with the British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, in 1988. He wanted to talk about the British bases on the island. In 1992, the UN Security Council even shared a draft for a resolution. However, the plan did not work out in 1994.
