He held two big jobs at the same time. He was the Archbishop of the Church of Cyprus. He was also a top politician. Because of his roles, many people called him the Ethnarch. This meant he was a national leader for his people. He helped lead Cyprus as it changed from a place ruled by Britain to an independent country.

His journey started with a focus on religion and learning. He was born in a village called Panayia in 1913. When he was 13, he joined the Kykkos Monastery as a novice. He later studied law and theology at the University of Athens. He even went to Boston University in the United States to study more. In 1948, he was elected Bishop of Kition. He chose the name Makarios, which means "happy" or "blessed."

Makarios spent many years working for a big idea called enosis. Enosis was the goal to join Cyprus with the country of Greece. In 1950, he became the Archbishop of Cyprus. This made him a very powerful person in politics. He worked with the Greek government to ask the United Nations for help. At the same time, a group called EOKA fought for independence. The British government did not want to leave the island. In 1956, the British took Makarios away from Cyprus. He lived in exile on Mahe Island in the Seychelles for a year.

After his time in exile, Makarios returned to Cyprus in 1959.

He did not join with Greece like he once wanted. Instead, he helped make Cyprus an independent nation. On August 16, 1960, Cyprus became independent. Makarios was elected as the very first president. He worked to keep Cyprus neutral. He joined a group called the Non-Aligned Movement. This helped him meet leaders in places like West Berlin and Bonn.

Even with independence, life on the island was often difficult. There were two main groups of people with different ideas. Some Greek Cypriots wanted enosis, while some Turkish Cypriots wanted Taksim. Taksim was the idea to split the island into parts. This caused a lot of tension and fighting between the groups. The United Nations sent peacekeepers to Cyprus in 1964 to help. Makarios won another election in 1968 with a huge number of votes. He stayed as president until he died in 1977.
