Spyros Kyprianou was an important leader from the island of Cyprus. He was born in the city of Limassol in 1932. His family had deep roots in the island. His father came from a large family in Lefkara. His mother belonged to a political family in Limassol. As a young man, he went to London to study. He learned about commerce at City of London College. He also studied law at Gray's Inn. He even earned a diploma in comparative law.

Spyros spent much of his early life working for his home. While studying in London, he helped Cypriot students form a union. In 1952, he worked as a secretary for Archbishop Makarios III. This leader was a very important person in Cyprus. Spyros also worked to tell the world about the needs of Cyprus. He traveled to Greece and even to New York to do this. He stayed in London until Cyprus became independent in 1959. He returned home to help build the new nation.

After Cyprus became independent in 1960, Spyros held many big jobs. Archbishop Makarios III made him the Minister of Justice. Soon after, he also became the Minister of Foreign Affairs. In this role, he spoke for Cyprus at the United Nations. He visited many different countries to talk with their leaders. In 1964, he even signed an agreement for military aid in Moscow. He later worked as a lawyer for a few years. He returned to politics by starting the Democratic Party in 1976.

Spyros became the President of Cyprus in 1977. This happened after the death of Archbishop Makarios III. He was the only person nominated for the job that year. Because no one else ran, a special election was not needed. He was elected again in 1978 and 1983. He served as president until 1988. During his time in office, he met with many world groups. He was part of the Commonwealth of Nations and the Non-Aligned Movement. He even received an honorary doctorate from the University of Belgrade in 1985.

Spyros continued to serve his country for a long time. He was elected President of the House of Representatives twice. He led this group from 1976 to 1977 and again from 1996 to 2001. His son, Markos Kyprianou, also became a leader in Cyprus later on. Spyros passed away in 2002 after a long fight with cancer. People in Cyprus still remember him today. Many streets, like Spyrou Kyprianou Avenue in Nicosia, are named after him.
