He was a very important person in the Anglican Church. He served as the Bishop of Johannesburg and the Archbishop of Cape Town. Tutu was the first Black African to hold these high positions. He was also a teacher and a priest. Throughout his life, he worked to make the world a fairer place. He used his voice to speak for many people who needed help.

Many years ago, South Africa had a system called apartheid. This system kept people apart based on their race. It was a very unfair way to run a country. Tutu became one of the most famous people fighting to end apartheid. He did not use violence to make his point. Instead, he believed in peaceful protest. He also asked other countries to use economic pressure to help bring change.

He wanted a democracy where everyone had the right to vote.

Desmond Tutu was born on October 7, 1931, in Klerksdorp.
