She was born in 1936 in a village called Mbhongweni. Her parents, Columbus and Gertrude, were both teachers. Winnie grew up in a large family with eight siblings. She became the head girl at her high school in Bizana. Later, she moved to Johannesburg to study social work. She earned her degree in 1956. She also later earned a degree in international relations.

In 1957, Winnie met Nelson Mandela at a bus stop. He was a lawyer and an activist. They married in 1958 and had two daughters. Their children were named Zenani and Zindziswa. Nelson Mandela was a leader fighting against apartheid. Apartheid was a system of very unfair laws in South Africa. In 1963, the government put Nelson in prison. He stayed in jail for 27 years. During this time, Winnie became a very important leader for his cause. She was often called the "Mother of the Nation."

Because of her work, the government treated Winnie very harshly. She was often arrested by the police. She spent 491 days in prison starting in 1969. During that time, she was kept in solitary confinement. This means she was kept in a room all alone. The government also banished her to a small town called Brandfort. While living there, she helped people by organizing a clinic and a creche. She became well known to people all over the world.

Later in the 1980s, Winnie's actions caused much trouble. She had a group of bodyguards called the Mandela United Football Club. This group was linked to many violent acts. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission found her responsible for human rights violations. Her group was involved in kidnappings and deaths. One famous case involved a 14-year-old boy named Stompie Seipei. Winnie was convicted of his kidnapping. Because of these actions, many of her supporters turned away from her. Even her own party, the ANC, criticized her.

After apartheid ended, Winnie returned to politics. Nelson Mandela was released from prison in 1990. The couple separated in 1992 and divorced in 1996. Winnie served in the South African government for many years. She was a Member of Parliament from 1994 to 2003. She also served again from 2009 until she died. She passed away on 2 April 2018.

Her life was a part of the big change in South Africa.
