Winnie married Nelson Mandela in 1958. He was a leader fighting for fair rules. At that time, the laws in South Africa were very unfair. This system was called apartheid. While Nelson was in jail, Winnie became a leader for his cause. The government treated her harshly. They put her in jail and kept her in a small room alone.

Later, Winnie's actions caused much trouble. She had a group of bodyguards. Some people said this group was too violent. They were linked to kidnappings and deaths. This made many of her friends angry. A group called the Truth and Reconciliation Commission found she was responsible for some of these wrongs.

After apartheid ended, Winnie worked in the government. She held many roles for many years. She died in 2018.
