He served as the president of the country for many years. Before he was a politician, he worked as a medical doctor. He studied to be an eye doctor in London, England. His family had a long history of leading the nation. His father, Hafez al-Assad, ruled Syria from 1970 until 2000.

Bashar grew up in a family that controlled the military and the government.

Life changed quickly for Bashar in the middle of the 1990s. In 1994, his older brother Bassel died in a car crash. This meant Bashar had to prepare to lead the country instead. He left his medical studies to join the military academy in Homs. He worked his way up to become a colonel in the Republican Guard.

He also took charge of Syrian affairs in Lebanon during this time. These steps helped him build a base of power before he became president.

Bashar became the president of Syria in the year 2000.

At first, some people felt hopeful about his leadership. They called this period the Damascus Spring because they wanted more democracy. They hoped for more freedom and more openness in the government. However, these hopes did not last very long. The government soon began to crack down on people who wanted change. This period ended, and the government became much more strict and controlling.

His time as leader was marked by many hard and difficult things. He used secret police to watch the people in Syria. Many people felt that his government was unfair to different groups. In 2011, many citizens began to protest for change. This led to a very long and deadly Syrian civil war.

Events in Syria changed again in late 2024. Rebel groups started several attacks to remove Assad from power. On December 8, 2024, rebel troops entered the capital city of Damascus.
